"The very first step in understanding what this is all about is giving up the concept of an active, volitional 'I' as a separate entity and accepting the passive role of perceiving and functioning as a process." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Do Not Skip Meditation

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj

You will not come to know very easily in the world about this great path to the Realization of Brahman, to Self-Realization. To serve the Guru is not only to care for him physically, you must regularly do the type of meditation as per your instructions. At least once in a week, you should try to do meditation for one hour more than usual. If it is not possible because of poverty for you to visit the Guru, you can at least do meditation in your home and concentrate on the Self and sing devotional songs (bhajans) with love for Guru and God. Understand that it is God Himself who is performing all these things, but do not give up your meditation. Remember and recite what is in the twelve abhangas (we stanzas of poetry containing the essence of the teaching) written by Tukaram every night. Lord Vithala has himself given the blessing to Saint Tukaram that whoever recites these abangas regularly will gain Self-Knowledge.

Even if there is death of somebody in your house, do not stop your meditation. Meditation should be regular. Even if the women have their monthly period, they should meditate. Do not harbor any doubts. Suppose tomorrow you are going to be busy, you should meditate for a little longer time today, but never abandon it. If there is so much work that you have no time even for dinner, then it can't be helped. Consider yourself excused. Even then, you should have in your heart a keen yearning for doing meditation on God. Do meditation in this way, and you will gain Self-Knowledge automatically.

Keep up the memory of God. Never harm anyone or blame anyone. What is to you, the deeds they have done? All will reap the fruit of their deeds. "Deception is nobody's relative." One who harms others suffers harm himself. Praise the good points in others, and don't criticize their vices. Be deaf to gossip. By gossip, enmity increases, and friendship is cut. Please remember this. You should daily sing bhajans, offer food to God, study and recite the teaching, and then put the Gods to sleep, and only then retire to bed. If you live with this desireless devotion, God will bless you.
