The sayings in this section have been collected from various sources like the Valmiki Ramayana, Adhyatma Ramayana and the Yoga Vasishtha Ramayana.
It is by delusion that you feel the existence of something that really does not exist, just as you imagine a snake in a rope. This imagination or false notion that something unreal is real, is what is called Adhyasa (superimposition). The Atman which is sat-chit-ananda (existence-knowledge-bliss) is untouched by such delusion.
Do you know how the Atman appears as being affected by happiness and misery? Just as a piece of iron which is heated in fire appears to be fire itself, the Atman when reflected in buddhi, makes us feel that it is affected by joys and sorrows. In fact, the Atman is unaffected.
When you truly understand that the Atman, which is your true Self, is without any attribute or attachment, you would give up your identification with your body which is inert and impermanent. So seek the true nature of Atman.
If you constantly think of the Atman, your mind will be purified and your ignorance will be uprooted along with the past tendencies, just as your ailments will completely disappear by your taking medicine daily. When the mind is pure, you will get unalloyed bliss.
