"The very first step in understanding what this is all about is giving up the concept of an active, volitional 'I' as a separate entity and accepting the passive role of perceiving and functioning as a process." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Tripura Rahasya

Sage Parasurama said,
  • I was defeated by that great Lord (Rama) and my pride was humbled. However, out of his innate kindness he let me go with my life because I was a Brahmin.
  • As I was returning, mortified by defeat, I realized the vanity of the ways of the world.
  • Unexpectedly I met Samvarta, the Lord of the avadhutas, and instinctively recognized him to be like fire in embers.
  • I asked him to tell me about his state. His answer was clear cut and expressive of the essence of the sweet nectar of eternal life.
  • I could not pursue the conversation then and felt like a beggar maid before a queen. However I prayed to him and he directed me to Thee.
  • Lord, kindly explain what Samvarta told me before. It is certain that I cannot realize the goal until it is made known to me.

सर्वभूताधिवासं यद्भूतेषु च वसत्यपि।
सर्वानुग्राहकत्वेन तद्स्म्यहं वासुदेवः॥

That in whom reside all beings and who resides in all beings,
who is the giver of grace to all, the Supreme Soul of the universe, the limitless being:
I AM THAT. -- Amritabindu Upanishad
