"Similarly, the veiling power covers the distinction of the creation and Reality and due to its influence, the Reality appears as though undergoing modification." - Verse 18
Excerpt From Commentary
Maya veils the Reality, causing only the names and forms of the world to be perceived. Maya is not some external mysterious power which casts spells. It exists only due to lack of enquiry. For instance, the play of form and color, light and shade on the movie screen are constantly changing. Our attention is focused only on them and not on the unchanging screen. When we see the forms, what we are really seeing is only the screen. Hence while seeing, we see not. This is maya.
We purchase grains of wheat from the market. They are pounded into flour and dough is made from it. It is baked in an oven to form a loaf of bread. A piece of it is served in a plate before us. It becomes a salivary morsel when eaten, then an acidic mass, and finally assimilated into the body as proteins and starch. If the protein in the grains, dough, flour or bread is not me, then how can the proteins which form the body be me?
Iron is hammered into various forms on the anvil, which remains the same. Similarly the Reality is the substratum over which all the changes appear and disappear.
