"The very first step in understanding what this is all about is giving up the concept of an active, volitional 'I' as a separate entity and accepting the passive role of perceiving and functioning as a process." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Faith in the Sadguru

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj

God never even puts a glance towards the person who expects powers. Giving up all desires is the main means for true Liberation. To be without any expectation whatsoever is the highest state. Total Freedom, the Sayujya State, clings to the feet of one who is desireless like a lump of clay. Expectation is desire. To be without expectation is itself the state of desirelessness. Faith in the Sadguru is the highest good fortune. There is a story of a cobbler named Basanna. The cobbler once made shoes for the Guru out of his own skin. When the king heard about this, he demanded to have a pair for himself. When the cobbler did not abide by this request, the king forced him to provide the shoes. However, when the king wore the shoes, his body began to have a burning sensation. The king begged to be forgiven. When the Guru told the king to take a dip in the water in the bathroom of the cobbler, the burning sensation was alleviated. God does not tolerate compulsion made on the devotee of the Guru. The Guru said that he himself was also not fit to wear those shoes because it increases pride and that they should be offered to his Guru, Shri Sadguru Linga- Jangam Maharaj. Then through his desirelessness and relinquishing of pride, that devotee of the Guru realized his True nature. Such is the faith in the Guru. If there is complete faith in the Guru, you can even raise someone who is dead by putting a little earth on him.
