"The very first step in understanding what this is all about is giving up the concept of an active, volitional 'I' as a separate entity and accepting the passive role of perceiving and functioning as a process." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

All is Brahman

Sri Siddharameshwar Maharaj

The original figure is "one" (1). One by one, the numbers start increasing. Although the numbers may increase infinitely, the primary number is only one, which remains after all the growth eventually is destroyed. So, only one is there, and there is no second. To see that there is "One" is Knowledge, to see that there are many is ignorance. The wind, the waters, everything, Goddess Earth, the Lord of Waters, the Lord of Fire, everything is the one Narayana. In everything, dwells only Life-Energy. The mind and the intellect are only chaitanya, and there is no "I" who assumes a separate existence. Only that should be taken out. We do not understand it, but we must understand that this "I" is false. "That" who knows that "I am the Life-Energy", is Shiva. When you conceive that what you call "me", as only the body, you are a small creature, a jiva, and that spells the expansion of the mundane existence.

The teachers in Illusion who themselves are ignorant have taught us "I AM". This world experience is limited by that boundary. Because of this teaching, this "I"must become a dog or cat. Through this worldly teaching, desire is increased and the individual sets up a household, and when dies with this body, he wants another body. Thus, again he gets the family life. Because of desire, he gets bodies in succession, and he gets birth in a body according to his desire. If you see through a microscope, you will see that the world is full of minute germs. A family man has more worries, and becomes more afraid. He is afraid even of an ant. He tries to save himself from the nuisance of ants. Please tell me what is in this body that dies, the five elements never die.

Suppose one is born and a name is given to him, but he dies after only 12 days. He is gone. He dies, but people still record his name even though the bearer of that name is gone (It is an Indian custom to name a baby 12 days after birth). We cannot meet him, as he was but an imagination. When people give a name to a child, they think a lot. This is all conceptual thinking. They give a name that comes to the surface of their mind. Nobody can say why but all are very keen about name and fame. Everyone is anxious that they should not be defamed or that their fame should not be reduced. We try very hard to take care of these things. All of this pride is only about that which is false. To take what is seen as true, is ignorance. To understand that all that is seen is false, is Knowledge. To classify into different groups is ignorance and to see everything as One is Knowledge. This means that to look with the Guru's point of view, is Knowledge. All is of the nature of Brahman.
