"The very first step in understanding what this is all about is giving up the concept of an active, volitional 'I' as a separate entity and accepting the passive role of perceiving and functioning as a process." - Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj

Ego's Manifestation

Sri Saradamma

Before self-realization I used to think how lucky I was to have a great Guru like Swamy (Lakshmana Swamy), and how lucky I was to feel such great devotion towards him. I can now see that this was just another subtle manifestation of the ego. Thinking that one has a good Guru causes the ego to rise because it makes one think that one is better off than other people who don't have a good Guru.

When one sits in meditation, the ego often rises simply because one is having a good experience. Once can become very quiet and still and think, "I am having a good meditation. If I carry on like this I will surely realize the Self in this life." Thinking that one is meditating well is just another manifestation of the ego.
